Where does BSR come from?
Body Stress Release was pioneered in the 1980's by a South African couple, Gail and Ewald Meggersee.
As a boy of five, Ewald fell out of a tree and the accident left him with chronic lower back pain and shooting pain down the legs. His condition worsened with the years. By the time he was in his thirties he started to experience bouts of temporary paralysis in his legs, at which point he was motivated to try chiropractic. It was the only treatment until then that seemed to bring some form of relief. Gail and Ewald grew curious of this form of therapy and in 1977 left everything behind to go study in America to become chiropractors.
While in the United States the Meggersee's met Dr. van Rumpt, a retired chiropractor who introduced them to a biofeedback technique. This is a muscle testing technique eliciting specific information through the body's reaction to light pressure tests and is the inspiration behind the development of BSR.
Gail and Ewald understood that the body is designed to be stress free and realized that its easy response to outside influences means that using force in order to treat it could in fact impose more stress. This is the reason that prompted them to develop a non-invasive and non-therapeutic technique to encourage the body towards its natural self-healing tendency. Through their intensive research and development of the Body Stress Release technique, Ewald and many more who suffered from chronic pain found complete relief.
As they received many requests to train others in their technique, they devised a training course, which they started to teach in 1987. Thus were the Body Stress Release Academy and Association founded.
